How to Start a Yoga Practice: A Beginner's Honest Guide

Beginner yoga class with foundational poses

The most common beginner mistake is starting with a class that's too advanced and deciding yoga isn't for them. Here's how Stillpoint recommends building a foundation - styles, frequency, and what to expect in your first month.

At Stillpoint, we approach every practice - beginner or 200-hour trained - from the same starting point: how does the body actually feel today, and what does it need? "How to Start a Yoga Practice: A Beginner's Honest Guide" is a question that comes up in our intake conversations almost weekly, and the honest answer rarely fits in a single sentence. Practice is personal, and a thoughtful framing matters more than a rigid prescription.

If you are new to beginner guides, the most reliable progress comes from showing up two to three times a week for a month, then evaluating. Anything less is hard to feel, and anything more without rest tends to backfire. We schedule our beginner and foundations series with that rhythm in mind, and every Stillpoint class begins with five minutes of breath work and grounding so your nervous system arrives before your body does.

A few principles guide our teaching. Effort and ease together - never one without the other. Modifications are not lesser versions of a pose; they are the right version for that body that day. Props are not training wheels; they are tools that let the pose meet you where you are. And the breath is the metric - when the breath gets ragged, the pose has gone past its useful edge.

Maya, Raj, and the rest of our teaching team come from different lineages - Iyengar, Ashtanga, Yin, somatic movement - and that range is intentional. We want students to find the teacher and style that resonates, not to push a single house style. Our weekly schedule reflects that: foundational vinyasa, slow-flow, yin, restorative, and breath-and-meditation, with class sizes capped so teachers can actually see you.

If you would like guidance on where to start, our new-student intro package includes two weeks of unlimited classes and a 20-minute one-on-one with a teacher to talk through your goals. Book through this page, or stop by the studio - the door is open, and tea is on.
