Why we don't run prepaid class packs anymore
When we opened Stillpoint we sold class packs the same way every studio does - five-class, ten-class, twenty-class punch cards with a year expiry. Two years in, we phased them out. The decision was driven by what we were seeing in our students' practice, not by our margins. A short note on why we made the change and what we recommend instead.
What was happening with packs
Class packs created a pattern we did not love. Students would buy a ten-pack at the start of the year, come to four classes in January, and then spend the next ten months feeling guilty about the six unused classes. Many of them would not come back at all because the guilt itself became a barrier. The ones who did come back often pushed to use up the pack on classes that did not actually fit what their body needed that week - going to Vinyasa when they really needed Restorative, just because the pack was burning down.
For us as a studio that meant a pile of unused credits sitting on the books, an awkward conversation every time a pack expired, and a student body that came in waves rather than as a community. For students it meant a yoga practice that was always slightly tied to a depreciating asset.
What we run instead
Our membership model replaced packs in 2024. It is $148/month for unlimited classes, no contract, cancel anytime. The math works out to roughly $7-$10 per class for someone attending three to four times a week, which is less than the per-class rate inside any pack we used to sell.
The behavior change has been real. Members come more consistently because the marginal class is free once they walk through the door. They are also more willing to attend a class style that is not their default - a Vinyasa regular trying Yin on a stressful week, a Restorative student dropping in on a Foundations class to learn new shapes. That cross-style practice is, in our experience, where the long-term benefits compound.
What we recommend
- If you are new to yoga: start with the first-class-free drop-in. See if the studio feels right.
- If you can practice once a week or less: stay on the $26 drop-in rate. The membership math does not work for you.
- If you can practice two or more times a week: the membership pays for itself in eight visits a month.
If you are unsure which tier fits your schedule, send us a note via the contact form and we will walk through your week with you. There is no upsell pressure; we would rather you skip a membership than feel like you wasted it.
